March 2020 change our world as we know it. As the owner of ClearChoice Sealing & Striping I do my best to attend industry events, network with my peers and learn as much as possible about the industry. As COVID was just making the news in early MArch I had traveled to Las Vegas for CONEXPO 2020. The largest construction industry trade show in North America held only every 3 years was happening and boy was I excited. Little did I know my first visit would see the show end early, Vegas go into shut down mode and the beginning of the weirdest period in time I have ever seen in my life.
Sealcoating season had not started yet and surely this little hiccup would be over by then. Right ? We didn’t get too concerned until schools began to close, restaurants were shut down to in person dining and church services went to online only. This all had to be a dream, There is no way it could be real, our economy was crashing around us, record unemployment, and the world seemingly had stopped turning. But, this couldn’t last long . Right? May rolled around and it was time to get ready for the season to get going full force, but the phone wasn’t ringing , no one was spending money and we were still in limbo. Alas this couldn’t go much longer. Right?
Fast forward to the end of May, we decided it was time to adapt and overcome. How ? You ask? We began doing virtual estimating through a combination of facetime consultations, having clients send photos and using online measuring tools. We also went to touchless invoices, accepting credit cards and online checks. It has been a very interesting time in which we have learned a lot. Residential sealcoating has been going very well while commercial customers are more geared to striping and adding new signange to adapt to the ever changing rules and restrictions placed upon them .
As the end of July nears it is shocking to think that we are still dealing with the virus. Cases appear to be on the rise and there’s a very real fear that we could see government mandated shut down again. As is the case with all small businesses we hope that does not happen again as many of our friends have already shuttered their doors. Hopefully that doesn’t happen and we can return to the “old normal” very soon!!!
In the meantime we will continue to be out around Western KY providing for all of your asphalt maintenance needs.
